It is not the initial DB access that is slower in DataMapper. Using Ruby's Benchmark module, timings are comparable, around 0.4ms. My next suspect is the attribute access in the views. Not clear how to time this.

According to How our small startup survived the Amazon EC2 Cloud-pocalypse, the outage was in availability zone us-east-1a. AmethystRSS is in us-east-1c. Nothing I've seen on Amazon Service Health Dashboard gives any information on which availability zones are affected. Mostly it says: we are working on it, and more pieces are working.

If I think about this from an information theory, it makes sense. I find it useful to think about Amethyst occasionally from this standpoint. Some fuzzy issues become clear, and somethings I'm clear about become fuzzy and I reexamine my clarity. Does it really make sense or am I fooling myself.

Theory is good for asking interesting questions. And the only perfect model of reality is reality.

A very nice additional benefit is that it cuts the average load by at least a third. Put another way, it allows 50% more users before requiring additional hardware. Sweet.
